The Euro-Arab Foundation organises a conference in Melilla on interreligious dialogue and hate crime prevention

Participatory approaches to the protection of places of worship is the title given to the forum hosted by the Government Delegation in Melilla on Thursday, organised by the Euro-Arab Foundation for Higher Studies in the framework of the PARTES project funded by the European Commission.

The Government Delegate, Sabrina Moh, opened the event by thanking Melilla for having been chosen as the venue for this forum and pointing out the importance of working for the prevention of hate crimes, inter-religious dialogue, tolerance and respect.

“We are witnessing the emergence of messages of polarisation and tension, and I think it is vital to work to prevent hate crimes, which is something that we must do together institutions and entities while focusing on this issue so that society is aware of this problem and tools are put in place to put an end to it”, Moh indicated.

On his part, the Executive Secretary of the Euro-Arab Foundation, Antonio Sánchez Ortega, recalled that the aim of the organisation he represents is to create bridges of collaboration, knowledge and research. He therefore recognised that Melilla is a “privileged” place, as it is an “estuary of civilisations and cultures which perfectly demonstrates this coexistence and this model of participation”.

Sánchez stressed that the results of these conference “will feed into the PARTES project and it will serve as a model for transfer to civil society”.

The working session was also attended by the representative of the European Commission’s funding programme, Tamara Muñoz, representatives of the State Security Forces and Corps, and members of the city’s religious communities, among other civil society organisations.

Opening of the participatory workshop, held at the UGR, by César Solano, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences (UGR), Tamara Muñoz, Programme Officer at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs, and José Luis Salido, researcher at the Euro-Arab Foundation and coordinator of the conference.

PARTES project

The European PARTES project started on 31 March 2023 and is scheduled to end in April 2025. It proposes to develop, through an empirical, inclusive and participatory methodology, a comprehensive prevention model for the protection of places of worship (synagogues, mosques, and churches) in the European Union, thus also preventing hate crimes against religious communities.

The Euro-Arab Foundation leads the “Threats and Responses Overview” Work Package which coordinates the research to establish an overview of attacks on religious communities, hate crimes against them, and existing protection measures. It identifies also good practices for cooperation between religious institutions and public authorities, for the protection of places of worship. The Euro-Arab was also in charge of organising the participatory workshop in Melilla, held on Wednesday at the UGR, and the inter-religious forum on Thursday at the headquarters of the Government Delegation in Melilla.

The kick-off meeting of VR Digivet, a European project whose main objectives are to improve the quality and responsiveness of Vocational Education and Training (VET) to economic and social developments, in order to increase the relevance of skills supply for the labor market, while empowering VET providers to strengthen cooperation between private and public stakeholders, took place in Tirana (Albania) on Thursday, February 15 and Friday, February 16.

The project has been developed based on the needs expressed by the Albanian government’s policy document, in particular the NESS 2019-2022, and the recommendations of the European Training Foundation in the framework of the Turin process, with the coordination of the Agenfor International Foundation (Italy) and a consortium including the Euro-Arab Foundation (Spain), HfÖV (Germany), NAES (Albania), Fan S.Noli (Albania), and Service Factory Solutions (Albania).

Representatives from all of them have participated in the first project meeting in Tirana, which was attended by the Albanian Government, and where all technical procedures were addressed and the next steps were discussed. VR Digivet representatives also made a study visit to an IT VET center in Gjergji Canco to check the VET center model in which the project will be developed.

The project’s success hinges on active involvement from key stakeholders in developing and overseeing Albania’s VET sector. This collaborative effort includes the Albanian government, VET providers, private sector representatives, experts, and VET students. By engaging in co-designing specific technical solutions, this approach ensures strong local ownership, enhancing its long-term sustainability.

To achieve this goal, a public Albanian VR Metaverse for VET will be designed, implemented, and managed by the National VET Authority. Here, national, European, and international partners, along with their trained personnel, will create and deliver immersive training programs, transforming traditional VET roles in the digital realm.

The Euro-Arab Foundation celebrates Yennayer 2974, the Amazigh New Year

The Euro-Arab Foundation, through its International Chair of Amazigh Culture, is organising a programme of activities this coming Thursday, January 18, to commemorate Yennayer, the Amazigh New Year, which will include a workshop on Amazigh pottery decoration, a photographic exhibition by the Africanist Emilio Blanco Izaga and a gastronomic tasting.

YENNAYER 2974 / 2024 AMAZIGH NEW YEAR

The Yennayer is an ancestral and traditional Amazigh festival celebrated in a spirit of joy and conviviality in regions of North Africa, in the Canary Islands and in sub-Saharan countries that remain attached to this centuries-old tradition of the Amazigh people.

Yennayer is the celebration of the Amazigh New Year, the first day of the year in the agrarian calendar used since ancient times by the Amazigh people, and corresponds to the victory of Sheshonq I over Pharaoh Ramses III and his enthronement as Pharaoh of Egypt. He is the founder of the XXII dynasty, which reigned in Egypt until 715 BC.

The word Yennayer is composed of ‘yen’, meaning ‘first’, and ‘yesterday’ (or ayyur), meaning ‘month’. It corresponds to the first day of the agrarian calendar used by the Amazigh for centuries, which in turn corresponds to the Julian calendar adopted in North Africa in ancient Rome and thirteen days out of step with the Gregorian calendar. This holiday is celebrated on 12 January each year and corresponds to the first day of January in the Julian calendar. According to the Amazigh calendar, this year 2024 corresponds to the Amazigh year 2974.

In addition to its traditional and popular character, this festival also has a vindictive component on the part of the Amazigh people, who are calling for the recovery of the traditional festivities of their culture so that they are not lost. In this sense, Yennayer has been established as a public holiday in Algeria and Morocco, from 2018 and 2024 respectively.

YENNAYER 2974 PROGRAMME AT THE EURO-ARABIAN

17:30h. Workshop on ‘Amazigh Rifeña Ceramic Decoration’.

Introductory workshop on decoration with some reddish and white earthenware pottery pieces with traditional Amazigh symbols and natural dyes. Pottery is an essential element in the daily life of the Amazigh people.
19:00 h. Inauguration of the exhibition: ‘The Rif at the beginning of the 20th century as seen by Emilio Blanco Izaga’.

Exhibition of photographs by Emilio Blanco Izaga taken during his stay in the Rif between 1927 and 1945, during his time as auditor of the Spanish Protectorate in Morocco.

19:30 h. Gastronomic tasting of Amazigh cuisine

The Yennayer meal is a central component of the celebration. Those attending this celebration, organised by Euro-Arab, will be able to taste typical Amazigh products such as: tea, laban, amlou, seasonal dried fruits, thighwawin and typical sweets. There is a great symbolic charge in the preparation of the Yennayer menu, the way it is presented and even the way it is consumed, all of which is consigned to end hunger, augur a good year, have good harvests, bless change and fervently welcome the invisible forces in which the Amazigh culture believed.

EXHIBITION

The Rif at the beginning of the 20th century as seen by Emilio Blanco Izaga
From 18 January to 23 February, 2024.

Visiting hours. Monday to Thursday from 9h. to 14h. and from 17h. to 20h. Friday mornings only. Weekends and public holidays, closed

The exhibition presented by the Euro-Arab Foundation consists of photographs from the beginning of the 20th century by Emilio Blanco Izaga, which he took during his stay in the Rif between 1927 and 1945, while working as an auditor for the Protectorate. The images, taken in black and white and at the standard size of the period, have been edited with the intention of recovering the original colour of their details and expressly enlarged for better viewing.

Language of poetry and the arts to celebrate World Arabic Language Day

On the occasion of World Arabic Language Day, Euro-Arabic and the University of Granada present a programme of activities from 16 November to 19 December, with workshops, conferences, a film forum and a video competition under the slogan ‘Language of poetry and the arts’.

18 December, World Arabic Language Day.

On 18 December 1973 the UN General Assembly of the United Nations declared the Arabic language as an official language of the UN. In commemoration of this designation, every 18 December is World Arabic Language Day, declared by UNESCO in 2012, with the aim of recognising the enormous contribution of the Arabic language to universal culture and celebrating linguistic diversity.

The Arabic language is a pillar of humanity’s cultural diversity. It is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, used daily by more than 400 million people. Since 2012, World Arabic Language Day has been celebrated every year on 18 December. The date coincides with the day in 1973 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted Arabic as the sixth official language of the United Nations.

UNESCO is calling to celebrate not only a language, but also a culture and, more broadly, to underline the extent to which we need this diversity of views on the world, as they constitute an invaluable wealth and the fundamental condition for lasting peace.
