The Pablo Olavide University (UPO) in Seville, Casa Árabe and the Euro-Arab Foundation have joined forces to organise this summer course, which will feature leading specialists in the contemporary Arab-Islamic world.
Directed by professors Veguilla del Moral and Govantes Romero, both lecturers in the UPO’s Department of Public Law, this course aims to provide students with the analytical tools necessary to understand the regional and international political challenges facing the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) today.
The course will focus on the challenges that emerged after the upheavals caused by the social mobilisations of the Arab Spring and the armed conflicts that broke out in the region. The aim is to present, from a global approach but also from the perspective of political change in authoritarian regimes, the main dynamics affecting the region (migratory processes, violation of human rights, interests of international organisations and foreign powers, disenchanted youth, etc.), specifying particular features in each context that we address, the result of their own trajectories.
The programme is aimed primarily at students and graduates in International Relations, Political Science, Communication Sciences, Translation, Arab and Islamic Studies, Sociology and Law, as well as media and civil society professionals.
This course will help participants to deliberate and develop reasoned arguments on these issues, placing the region in its global context without losing sight of the local and regional dynamics, cultures and political traditions of each country.
The sessions will be taught by recognised authorities in their respective fields, allowing students to explore and deepen their understanding of the great diversity of the contemporary Arab-Islamic world in a context of proximity to specialists on the region.
In the context of the current situation arising from COVID-19, this online course is the perfect opportunity to connect and share the experience with people from all over the world, and at the same time to do so from anywhere.
