Selves and Others: A Portrait of Edward Said
Documentary directed by Emmanuel Hamon and produced by Salem Brahimi. ‘Selves and Others’, with a length of 54 minutes, is a production filmed right after the dead of the Palestinian intellectual, offering a comprehensive view of his last reflections.
Edward Said was a political activist, university professor, literary critic and pianist. He was born to a Palestinian Christian family in Jerusalem. He grew up in Egypt, moving then to New York, where he spent most of his adult life. His facet as a political activist was mainly focused on the advocacy of the cause of the Palestinian people and the call for an scenario that puts the Arab-Israeli conflict into an end.
‘Selves and Others’ collects the testimony of the author about his childhood and his ideas against extreme nationalism, as well as the consequences of the so-called clash of identities between the East and the West. He represents this conception with the city of New York, in the sense that it combines tradition with a constantly changing reality.
